The grants ranged from $1000 to $2000 and were awarded to the Beaconsfield Primary School Parents Association, Ansons Bay Progress Association, Doing Life Together, Tamar FM, Point of Women. Clarence Point, Pegasus Riding, Northern Support School, Launceston Elderly Citizens Club and George Town Archers.
Bell Bay Aluminium community relations specialist Lou Clark said the organisation loved having the chance to give back.
‘‘It’s great that a company like ours can give back to the community in that way,’’ Ms Clark said.
It was difficult to choose between the 70 applicants, she said.
Bernice Jurgeit is president of Pegasus Riding, who have recently opened a centre for horse riders of all abilities near Evandale.
Ms Jurgeit said the $1200 grant would be used to buy special riding helmets.
‘‘It was amazing to get chosen, because we didn’t have any expectation that we might be successful. It’s acknowledgment that our hard work is paying off,’’ Ms Jurgeit said.
‘‘There have been no opportunities in Northern Tasmania for adults or children with disabilities [to horse ride], and we have decided to set our program up based on all abilities,’’ she said.
