A feasibility study into investment in Ben Lomond was presented to the council during Monday's meeting.

The study identified that for a $1.8 million investment the ski field could provide the area with a major tourism and recreational product of state significance.

The report said the upgrades would be capable of generating "new and complementary tourism investment in Northern Tasmania," and would contribute to the economic growth of the wider region.

Cr Downie said securing the funding and improving the area for skiers would be vastly beneficial. "It's a good area, particularly for beginners and families for skiing ... if we can get other funding I think it will be great," he said.

"You'd have to hope that there would be some private money and some government money."

Cr Downie said contributions to the future of Ben Lomond by a range of groups - not just the council - would be vital for ensuring the area's success.

He said the investment would not only increase tourism to the area, but had the potential to create jobs as well.

"There's opportunities for people to get work, in a time of the year when a lot of our tourist operators (are quiet) - they ramp up in the summer, this is a winter activity," he said.

"Don't underestimate the ability of Ben Lomond to be a recreation area for the summer time too."

The study by TRC Tourism cost $20,000. The council partnered with Parks and Wildlife, the Department of State Growth, Launceston City Council, Regional Development Australia (Tasmania), Northern Tasmania Development, the Ben Lomond Committee and two private individuals to fund it.
