Commander Glenn Frame said: “As a result of analysing the threat, in conjunction with other jurisdictions, we can advise we do not consider the threat to be genuine and does not pose a risk to staff and students.”
Police resources will now be withdrawn from campuses, but Commander Frame said the university and police would continue to work together.
He confirmed that the threat was similar to those posted against intrastate and international universities.
UPDATE 11am: The threat at University of Tasmania campuses is believed to have subsided.
Police and security continue patrols on the Launceston, Burnie, and Hobart sites.
UPDATE 10am: Tasmania Police has reassured staff and students at the university to "go about their business".
In a statement on the Tasmania Police website, Commander Glenn Frame says: "At this stage we do not believe the threat is credible, however it is being assessed. In the meantime, we have deployed police resources to UTAS campuses as a precaution and for reassurance to staff and students."
“At this stage the claims are general in nature, and appear to be similar to those made against a number of campuses interstate,” Commander Frame said.
On Monday, there was a threat made against staff and students of the University of New South Wales Sydney campus.
It was also posted on 4Chan, and follows similar threats issued against schools in the US.
“We will be working in conjunction with UTAS and will provide an update as soon as we can," Commander Frame said.
“In the meantime, we encourage everyone on campus to go about their business as usual."
UPDATE 9.15am: The university has revealed the anonymous threat was made by a user of the online community 4Chan.
A statement from the university reiterated that the threat was general in nature, and was not a direct or specific threat to any particular campus.
EARLIER: Extra security forces are patrolling University of Tasmania campuses after a threat was made.
Via a statement on its Facebook page, the university said it became aware of a threat made to the safety of students and staff on Monday night.
Tasmania Police has been notified of the threat, which is "general in nature" and is not specific to any campus.
There will be an increased security presence on the campuses throughout Tuesday.
While the campuses will remain open, those student and staff who choose not to attend "will not be disadvantaged".
