TASMANIA'S coastline could be affected by a future oil spill from one of BP's deep-sea wells in the Great Australian Bight, according to independent modelling commissioned by the Wilderness Society.

The Wilderness Society said the modelling showed a deep-sea well blowout would be devastating for fisheries and marine life in the Bight, Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea.
BP has secured permits to drill four deep-water exploration wells in the bight, and will begin drilling during the summer of 2016-17.
The modelling, conducted by independent ocean scientist Laurent Lebreton, shows Tasmania's North West coastline would be affected within 60 days of a spill during winter, or within 120 days of a spill occurring in summer.
BP's Deepwater Horizon deep-sea well exploded in 2010, resulting in an oil spill that continued for 87 days in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Wilderness Society's Tasmanian campaign manager Vica Bayley said the modelling showed there were serious concerns for coastlines across the south of Australia, including Tasmania.
"I think it's a little known risk that BP is exploring for oil in the Great Australian Bight, deeper and arguably rougher than the Gulf of Mexico," he said.
"We all saw the horrific pictures from the Gulf of Mexico of oil-covered birds and turtles and so forth.
"The Great Australian Bight is a breeding sanctuary for whales, it's an incredibly important marine ecosystem.
"This should be a serious concern to governments across southern Australia and also the Australian government."
A spokeswoman for BP said the company had yet to see the Wilderness Society's modelling.
"BP's modelling allows us to plan for a range of credible spill scenarios," she said.
"Our full Environment Plan that has been submitted to the independent regulator, NOPSEMA, details what we plan to do, identifies the environmental risks, and explains our plans to manage them so that they are 'as low as reasonably practical' and acceptable. The Environment Plan contains an Oil Pollution Emergency Plan that details how in the unlikely event of a spill, BP will be able to stop it, recover oil and support rehabilitation."
