Cody John Newman, 26, was unable to smash the driver's side window so he walked to the rear of the taxi and smashed the back windscreen instead, the Launceston Magistrates Court heard.
Magistrate Reg Marron told Newman on Wednesday that if he failed to provide proof he had genuinely changed his ways before his sentencing, he would be going to jail.
"You are a violent drunk," he told Newman.
"I just want you to imagine the taxi driver sitting there while you're thumping on their window and smashing the rear one.
"It would be terrifying.
"No one held you down when you decided to drink at 2pm the previous day and then you went on a bender."
Mr Marron said he did not accept the submission that Newman's crime was a one-off.
"The flavour of your offending is that you have done it before," he said.
Mr Marron said he was considering giving Newman "some time out" in jail, so he should consider packing his toothbrush next time.
"The Launceston community doesn't want you on the street," he said.
"For a father of a two-year-old child to be out there smashing windows on a taxi - it's not a very good look for a dad, is it?"
Mr Marron adjourned sentencing to December 4.
He told Newman to provide a liver function test, proof of compensation for the taxi window repairs and if possible, proof of attendance at alcohol and drug counselling.
Newman had pleaded guilty to having destroyed property and the failure to comply with police directions on April 12 about 4am in George Street, central Launceston.
He had also pleaded guilty to breaching bail.
