A positive atmosphere had already swept the town last month as they took home the Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Town award for 2015 and Cr Kent said that the announcement had only added to the feeling.

It was announced last week that TasPorts was finalising the sale of the wharf with Tas Marine Construction to use the wharf to develop a $6 million commercial marina in the area.

The marina would cater for 150 yachts and cruisers and had the potential to create jobs in the region.

In the future, it is hoped that the marina will attract large scale tourist attractions to encourage more people to visit the East Coast of Tasmania.

Cr Kent said that with this new announcement, the future of the town was looking bright.

"There is a very, very strong, enthusiastic vibe around the place at the moment," he said.

"If someone's going to spend that sort on money putting 150 births there, that's fantastic for the area.

"Those people who have those sorts of yachts are the people with a lot of money so there is the chance of them then mooring there and then going out and visiting the East Coast."

Cr Kent said that he hoped that with such a large marina, people would moor there and go one to spend a few nights exploring the area, bringing in additional money.

"We want to make it more attractive to the potential tourists over the next 18 months," he said.

"We're just trying to lift the whole image of the town for tourists to go there."

The former Gunns mill that sits next to the wharf has not been used since it was bought by entrepreneur Graeme Wood in 2011.
