For 12 days, students from St Marys District High School will be making themselves at home in a small village in rural Cambodia.

The students and two accompanying teachers have spent the past few months raising $2415 to take to the village, along with clothes, books and stationery.

The group will work closely with their friendship school, Donsava Primary School, to not only form bonds and friendships in the community but to give their classrooms a much-needed makeover.

The group had already finished painting the school's library last week and are waiting for tilers to finish their work before they can finish the renovation.

St Marys District High School teacher Tom Spykers is over in Cambodia with the students and said that so far, it had been a busy, rewarding and fascinating trip.

"The students are enjoying it so far and have really immersed themselves in Cambodian culture," Mr Spykers said.

"We have played games with the children and taught them how to make paper planes, which they loved.

"Our students have loved visiting the temples, land mine museum and local markets . . . we really don't want this trip to end."

The students also brought over a scrapbook that they created to show the Cambodian children Tasmanian culture and the school-life.

In return, the Cambodian pupils taught the group traditional Khmer games.

The group will return from their travels on October 9.
