Police say a woman on foot asked the teen to get into a car - a white Hyundai Excel - on Goulbourn Street about 1pm on Saturday.
The female was outside the car, and reportedly tried to grab at the teen's clothing in an effort to pull her into the car, being driven by a man.
The teen ran away, alerting relatives who in turn contacted police.
Northern CIB detectives are now appealing to any one who saw a white, mid-1990s model four-door Hyundai Excel around the time of the incident.
Inspector John King said it was a disturbing incident that police were treating very seriously.
“Please encourage your children to walk with someone else or in a group, where possible," Inspector King said.
"And as this teenager did, contact police to report suspicious activity as soon as possible."
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
