"It's a song basically about a guy that really likes a girl. However, the girl definitely doesn't feel the same way," Barnes told X-static.
"So the guy is conspiring to win her over, whether she likes it or not.
"A few of the lyrics are talking about making a potion and bringing the eye of a poisonous snake - it's a bit cryptic."
Barnes, the North-West singer-songwriter whose music career has been on an upward trajectory since appearing on Australian Idol, said the track was one that meant a lot to him.
"It definitely feel this is my strongest release to date and I'm blown away that it's already one of the most added tracks to Australian radio this week.
"Especially when it's a 100 per cent independent release, it makes all the hard work worthwhile."
Barnes worked with US producer Nick Didia, who has also worked his magic with Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, Powderfinger and Kasey Chambers.
"It was a dream come true and I was really fortunate that he was into the track and agreed to work with us."
Barnes promised that a new album would be on its way in 2016.
The One You Love is available on iTunes.
