Friends come and go. High school ends. Adulthood becomes a sudden and ugly reality.
While some of her friends are stressed about university and former classmates prepare for weddings or children, 19-year-old Adelaide rapper Tkay Maidza reflects on a tour of Los Angeles and San Francisco with British pop star Rita Ora.
"It was really fun, really cool," Maidza said.
"It was cool to see that side of their environment. It was daunting but it was cool."
Maidza first shot to fame when Triple J picked up her Bad Cop-produced song Brontosaurus in 2013.
Her music has been described as brat rap and compared favourably with artists including MIA and Azealia Banks.
Highlights for the Zimbabwean-born musician have included hits Switch Lanes, Uh-Huh and M.O.B, a collaboration with big-name producer SBTRKT and touring with DJ Mark Ronson.
This year's solo Australian tour sold out in many major cities, and a second show was scheduled for Hobart audiences to meet demand.
Maidza last played the state at Falls Festival in December before she travelled the nation for Splendour in the Grass. Her schedule has been very busy in the interim.
She said much of her time was now taken up with writing and recording tracks for her upcoming album.
"I'm just trying to get as many tracks as possible," she said.
"There's lots of songs I probably won't choose.
"I'm working with some new producers and working with some people I've always worked with, meeting new people and starting from scratch."
Maidza said her rise to fame had thrown up a number situations she wasn't yet used to dealing with.
One of those things, she said, was being recognised in the street.
Maidza said she was surprised when a fan started crying while talking to her. Other fans are shocked when she talks to them.
"I think I'm becoming a known face, kind of," she said.
"It's pretty weird. I don't understand it sometimes.
"I'm really normal."
Maidza is as normal as any 19-year-old could be who tours the world rapping.
She said she still loved going to the beach and was grateful to spend time with friends away from the industry.
Maidza said she took comfort in her age.
"It's interesting, because I'll complain about getting on planes and my friends will complain about their homework," she said.
"There was a time when I was like 'I don't know what's happening' but then I realised I'm still 19."
Tkay Maidza will perform with Willow Beats, Porches and L.K McKay Thursday night at 8pm at the Republic Bar in Hobart.
A second show, to be held Friday with the same artists at the same venue, has sold out.
Maidza will also play Party in the Paddock in February 2016.
