HOBART Phoenix upset the previously undefeated favourites Lauderdale Grenadiers in one of the best matches played in the state basketball league's weekend round.
Phoenix went into the game with a 2-1 record and knocked off the competition title favourites by eight points after experts predicted pre-season that they would finish fifth out of the nine teams.
A total of nine games were played over a busy weekend for the state competition at venues in Hobart and Launceston.
In a triple-header at Warrane Stadium on Saturday, the Hobart Chargers development team played a good quality of basketball against the strong Devonport outfit to push them all the way before going down by six points.
Lauderdale Grenadiers met the Launceston Rebels and were far too strong recording a comfortable 30-point victory with former US college player Matthew Young a standout and sure to play with a SEABL team next season.
Hobart Moonah took on Burnie and despite pegging back an early deficit to four points, the North-West side proved too good winning by 20 points.
At Launceston's Elphin Stadium on Sunday, the Basketball Tasmania high performance team played the City Lions with the home side recording a 17-point victory.
The BTas high performance women turned the tables in their second game against the City of Launceston women notching up an 84-62 win.
The Hobart Breakers took on Burnie on their home court with both teams having a 2-0 record going into the match.
The Breakers were unfortunately without three of their starting line-up and were no match for Burnie who won by 40 points with Joe Chilcott having a great game shooting 33 points.
Hobart Moonah took on Launceston Rebels at Warrane and played some fantastic basketball to record their first victory of the year taking them to a 1-3 record while the Rebels dropped to 2-3.
Devonport women extended their unbeaten record to 5-0, with a five-point win over the strong Hobart Phoenix outfit.
