NORTH Launceston defied the odds to win back-to-back state premierships for the first time in 64 years after beating Glenorchy by 12 points in a tight and hard-fought TSL season decider at Bellerive Oval on Saturday.
The Northern Bombers went in as underdogs and reclaimed their spot at the top of State League football after defeating pre-match favourites Glenorchy 13.13 (91) to 11.13 (79), in a great contest.
North overcame a road trip South, the drama surrounding the loss of ruckman Daniel Roozendaal and injuries to key forward Tom Bennett and defender Jay Lockhart to defend their 2014 premiership and claim back-to-back State League flags for the first time.
In a high-pressure contest, North started well in the opening quarter throwing everything at Glenorchy with their pressure outstanding and forcing the minor premier into errors.
With Alex Lee playing well in the ruck the Bombers tackling was a highlight.
North kicked the first four goals of the game with two each to Brad Cox-Goodyer and Allan O'Sign and one to Will McBride among five for the quarter to lead by 19 points at quarter time.
Glenorchy settled in the second quarter and lifted their intensity and pressure to wrest back control of the contest.
They kicked the first four goals of the second term to grab the lead until Jake Pearce kicked a much-needed steadying goal for North at the 17-minute mark.
When Cox-Goodyer booted his third for the game late in the quarter the Bombers led by five points at the main break.
The premiership quarter proved an arm wrestle with no goals scored in the opening 10 minutes.
Cox-Goodyer broke the deadlock and grabbed his fourth to give North an eight-point break at the 11-minute mark and a Josh Holland goal shortly after extended it to 13 points.
The Magpies peppered their goals during the term but inaccuracy proved costly with them booting nine behinds until Jaye Bowden kicked a late to get them to within four points at three-quarter time.
Bowden booted another in the first minute of the final quarter to give Glenorchy the lead but a Holland reply straight after put North up by four points.
The two teams traded goals in a frenetic last term and when O'Sign goaled with his third of the game at the 18-minute mark North held a one goal lead until man-of-the-match Holland snapped a sensational sealer at the 22-minute mark from deep in the right-hand pocket to give the Bombers a match-winning 12-point advantage.
Cox-Goodyer finished with four goals for North, with three each to Holland and O'Sign.
Holland was outstanding all day as the Bombers best player and a worthy winner of the State League's Darrel Baldcock Medal as best on ground to add to his two best and fairest medals from his NTFL days.
Ethan Petterwood, Cox-Goodyer and defenders Geoff Mohr and Corey Nankervis were other good players for North with Lee doing well in the ruck as Roozendaal's replacement.
"I am just ecstatic for this group and the resilience they've shown," North coach Zane Littlejohn said.
"I said at three-quarter time not many people in Australia had us to win today and I'm super proud of them.
"That's my best win for my four years because no-one thought we'd win it and we've won a premiership away from home, with things not go our way with injuries and with Daniel and this shows the resilience of our group to bounce back and keep fighting."
Bowden was Glenorchy's best player and goalkicker finishing with four for the game with Piuselli, Muir, Brayden Webb and Matt Dilger other good contributors.
"We are obviously very disappointed and an empty feeling there that we didn't get the job done," Glenorchy coach Aaron Cornelius said.
"You can't only play one quarter and expect to win the grand final."
