IT WAS a case of third time lucky for Peter Burr on the first day of the annual Cressy Trout Expo at Brumbys Creek, near Cressy.
After going home without so much as a bite at his previous two attempts, the Burnie resident on Saturday landed a whopping rainbow trout that weighed 3.28 kilograms when gutted.
Mr Burr said that he was not be able to stay for Sunday’s second day because he had two puppies at home and they needed a good walk.
When Mr Burr went home about 3pm with partner Linda Polden to cook the fish for dinner, he said he hoped no one would catch anything bigger.
They didn’t, but the Atlantic salmon weighed in by Blackwall’s Mark Hunt was just four grams lighter.
Trout Expo committee president Richard Goss said that about 600 anglers tried their luck on the first day.
‘‘They weighed in 68 fish between them and that’s nearly twice as many as Saturday last year, when just 36 were logged,’’ he said.
The expo runs from 8am to 4pm on Sunday, and Tommy the tagged trout, worth $10,000 to the angler who lands him, is still at large.
