In winning the event, Birthwhistle became the third Australia to win the coveted under-23 ITU title.
Birtwhistle, 20, overcame a grade-one tear to his hamstring to win the event in 1:40.51 from Spain's David Castro Fajardo and Nan Oliveras.
It capped an eye-catching first year on the World Triathlon Series for the boy who had to choose between a career on the running track and a career in triathlon.
He was quick to praise the efforts of team physiotherapist Dean Sullivan, who put a detailed daily plan together for the young star.
“When I asked Dean if I would be alright to race he told me I would but I must admit I still had my doubts – but the job he and the team at TA have done to get me to the line and through that race was amazing,” said Birtwhistle.
“I can’t thank them enough and to come here and win this race today after what has been an up and down year is so exciting.”
Australia's Declan Wilson, who led the chase group on the bike and up to the lead group finished 22nd and Matt Baker was 25th.
