Two Launceston kayakers made the discovery on Friday in an area of the river close to Arthur Street, which is the last place Mr Plowright, 20, was seen on May 30 after attending a party in Perth.
His parents Ruth and Steve Plowright were notified about the body on Friday afternoon while on holiday in Europe.
Inspector John King said they were travelling back home and are expected in Launceston some time next week.
''There will be a post-mortem on Monday by the government pathologist. The pathologist will be able to give us an indication whether this is a suspicious circumstance, and will assist with the formal identification,'' Inspector King said.
''There is no indication to suggest anything untoward.''
The location of the body was in an area that was extensively searched by police, who combed the area using divers and drones.
Weeks after the disappearance, police and search and rescue squads along with more than 250 community volunteers conducted one of the biggest searches in Tasmania around the Perth township.
Public appeals for witnesses who might have seen Mr Plowright walking along the Midland Highway were made, repeated searches of the river were undertaken, and police took control of Mr Plowright's Facebook page for clues of his whereabouts.
Inspector King said police were always of the opinion that Mr Plowright was in that area.
“We believe this is a really good result for the family. They now know what’s happened to Ben,’’ he said.
