Video clips seem an almost quaint idea these days, yet they're still excellent drivers of publicity for their stars. Usually though, it's states of undress that can drive controversy. Not so for Taylor Swift's new video for her single Wildest Dreams. As she frolics with a bevy of African wildlife, Ms Swift is seen is a 1940s-style brunette wig.

Is it that bad? Is it just because it's not blonde? And is this the first time something superfluous has caused video-clip related chattering?
It's certainly not the first time we've seen a celebrity in a questionable hairpiece. Hollywood has turned out some shockers.
Here, off the top of our heads, are some of the worst on screen barnets.
Colin Farrell in Oliver Stone's 2004 biopic Alexander
Wow. It seems unlikely, given he was Greek and all, but apparently there is a theory that Alexander the Great may have been blonde. Presumably less bouffant though.
David Bowie in Labyrinth
Although to be fair, Bowie could have rocked this hairstyle in real life and we wouldn't have blinked. Cameron Diaz's in 1999's Being John Malkovich
This one might actually be equally as good as it is bad; it's amazing as Diaz looks nothing like her real self (ie: the remit of acting), and so bad that it makes my scalp itch.
Anne Hathaway's number in Brokeback Mountain
In the groundbreaking film of 2005, Ang Lee's cowboy drama was praised for its daring portrayal of a gay romance. Not for Anne Hathaway's Dolly Parton wig.
Josh Hartnett in The Virgin Suicides
Yes, it's set in the 1970s but this is surely the worst man-bob in recent memory.
Andrew McCarthy in Pretty In Pink
In one of John Hughes' iconic 80s teen films, heartthrob Andrew McCarthy, who was playing the suave rich kid Blaine, wore a bad wig in some of the film's later scenes. For no apparent reason.
Dana Carvey in Wayne's World
Apparently Dana Carvey based his character Garth on his brother Brad. Kind of insulting.
Michael Douglas in Steven Soderbergh's Behind The Candelabra (2013)
A tricky one though, given Douglas was portraying a man famous for his bad toupees.
And the best on-screen wig?
Will Ferrell as Mugatu in Zoolander - no competition.
