As the average petrol price in Hobart on Thursday sat at 140.1¢, ahead only of Brisbane's price at 143.0¢, according to MotorMouth, RACT general manager member assist Darren Moody said there was no excuse for prices to be so high.
"Global oil prices two days ago was $38 a barrel and in July last year it was $114 a barrel. We've lost a little bit on currency because the Australian dollar's dropped off a bit," Mr Moody said.
"Retailers are clearly taking advantage of motorists. There's no other excuse."
Mr Moody said that while he thought it was unrealistic for Tasmanian prices to ever be as low as interstate prices, the margin should not be as wide as it was.
"I think it's unreasonable to expect parity purely on the amount of transactions, but the margins should be closer," he said.
The lowest petrol prices in the country on Thursday were in Melbourne, 117.1¢, Adelaide, 120.0¢, and Sydney, 129.0¢.
