Held annually since 2004, the day aims to celebrate canines of all shapes and sizes, while promoting responsible dog ownership.
It also serves to promote the adoption of dogs from shelters, such as the RSPCA Tasmania.
To celebrate National Dog Day and everything it stands for, The Examiner is setting a goal to find a forever home for Dozer and Trigger.
Dozer, a black labrador, and Trigger, a collie-heeler cross, have been living together since they were 12 weeks old.
Now aged five, they were surrendered to the Launceston care shelter when their owner encountered serious health problems and could no longer care for them.
Launceston RSPCA shelter manager Lorraine Hamilton said it would be great to see the pair adopted together.
''The good thing about adopting them together is that they're great friends, and they'll keep each other company,'' Ms Hamilton said.
"However they will need someone to give them a good amount of exercise.
''For Dozer in particular, being a labrador, it would be great if he went to a family with a dam, or access to a river, somewhere he could go for swims.''
According to their file, Dozer and Trigger are friendly, approachable dogs, and love to play with children.
They might have a few excess pounds to drop, but their quick-to-wag tails and friendly temperament more than make up for it.
Ms Hamilton said that because the pair were out of the ''puppy stage'', they were also more settled and less destructive.
As with all dogs adopted out by the RSPCA, they are both vet checked, temperament tested, microchipped, and desexed.
To meet Dozer and Trigger, visit Launceston RSPCA at 63 Remount Road, Mowbray , or phone 6332 8282.
