An officer was taken hostage by two inmates at Risdon Prison's maximum security wing this morning, authorities have confirmed.
Director of Prison Services Brian Edwards said the prisoners forced the officer into a cell, before brandishing a makeshift knife and threatening him.
Mr Edwards said the incident was injury was resolved without injury, and was now being investigated by police.
UPDATE 12pm
A 'security incident' at Risdon Prison earlier this morning is now over.
The Tasmania Prison Service says that the complex is now returning to normal operations following the incident between a correctional officer and two prisoners at the Derwent Unit this morning.
The service said that no staff or prisoners were injured during the incident.
Tasmania Police have arrived on site to begin their inquiries.
Director of Corrective Services Rob Williams praised prison staff for their "professional response and handling of this incident across the service".
Mr Williams said that in accordance with standard post-incident protocols, staff and prisoners will be offered support and assistance.
It had been reported that a guard had been taken hostage, although that has not been confirmed.
UPDATE 11.40AM
An ambulance has just left the prison. It is not known if any injuries have been reported.
