The $9.6 million project will see a 3.2-kilometre section of the highway between the Birralee Road Overpass and Exton converted into four lanes.
Construction is expected to begin in October and be completed by May next year.
Lyons Liberal MHR Eric Hutchinson announced tenders had opened for the project on Saturday.
He said the development would link two divided dual carriageway sections between Hagley and West-bury.
"For people other than locals the section does present challenges," Mr Hutchinson said.
"It can be confusing whether it is two lanes or not.
"It's not well signed so it needs to be addressed."
Mr Hutchinson said the development would help eliminate head-on crashes and the risk of accidents.
He said the work would see the highway upgrade to a minimum AusRap 3 star safety standard and include the installations of flexible safety barriers.
The federal government has invested $7.7 million in the project, with the state government contributing $1.9 million.
Construction of the additional traffic lanes will occur alongside the existing highway.
Traffic flow is not expected to be directly affected by the works.
Tenders close on September 9.
