So much for western civilisation. So much for reforms that empower police to intervene without a complaint and remove the coward from the scene.
Family violence is on the rise across the state, with more incidents recorded in the Northern half.
The government has announced a new range of initiatives, but really the focus must also be on future generations.
Children suffering family violence are at risk of becoming the next generation of perpetrators: the mostly male cowards, who bash their weaker partners, or control them by financial or other means.
Family violence undermines the notion of the home as a haven and the safety of those closest to you. It undermines our social order.
A safe home environment is a strong response to crime, alcohol and substance abuse, and education for children. The education community would be overloaded with instances of family violence affecting education outcomes for children.
How many kids are going backwards in development because several times a week Dad or the step-dad gets drunk or high and bashes Mum?
How many families are intimidated into silence? The partner who cops it sweet week after week, in order to keep the family together and not lose the kids to child protection.
How many more deaths will result because a remorseful drunk or ice addict went too far this time, but blames his addiction in order to get sympathy from the court?
If it is not checked, family violence will get worse.
It can be overcome with long-term strategies that will painfully take some years to work. It will take longer than the assistance of a few celebrities, a few million dollars and a few press statements.
In the end it will affect us all and will require all of us to help put an end to this cowardice.
