The winning ticket was bought at Brisbane Street News & Lotto, and was the biggest Tasmanian jackpot of 2015, topping the $833,000 prize won by a George Town woman in May, and the $608,000 won by a Kingston resident in February.
While initially there was some doubt whether the winner was aware of their windfall, the prize was eventually claimed on Tuesday morning.
Brisbane Street News & Lotto owner Garry Matthews said the store had been abuzz following news that the winning ticket was bought in his store.
‘‘The last couple of days have been extremely busy, we’ve had a lot of new faces in here today buying tickets,’’ Mr Matthews said.
Mr Matthews said there had been some exciting moments for customers when scanned tickets were met by a winning ticket alarm.
‘‘There’s been a lot of excitement for people who want to check their tickets or their cards and come in with weighted expectations,’’ he said.
‘‘The noise is the same regardless of whether its a $10 prize or a million dollar prize, so everyone looks on with anticipation.’’
The $1.2 million prize was the biggest the store has ever seen, and the first superdraw win for the current owners.
‘‘The last [superdraw winner] must have been about 10 years ago, so it’s been a long time between drinks,’’ Mr Matthews said.
‘‘It’s good to see that a local person has won and it’ll be a real benefit to them.’’
