While I don't agree with the Launceston City Council developing one at the aquatic centre - as only a select group of people are going to benefit from it - the concept behind it is fabulous.
How many times have you seen people doing something and thought "I want to do that"?
We're a society that conforms, and seeing others doing things often pressures us to do the same.
In the case of outdoor gyms, they could encourage more people to get active.
A state government release from February revealed 69.4 per cent of Tasmanians were physically inactive, compared to 67.5 per cent nationally.
It also revealed that 65.6 per cent of Tasmanians were overweight or obese, compared with 63.9 per cent five years ago.
As a state, we need to be doing what we can to decrease these statistics and maybe creating more outdoor gym environments, which are free to use, could be a good start.
We already have a small outdoor gym near the barbecue area at Royal Park, but we could be doing more.
The council has recently called for expressions of interest on what the Royal Park tennis courts, which are located between the bowls club and the rugby ground, could be used for.
The 7LA Tennis Club formerly leased the courts, but when the club folded due to dwindling membership earlier this year, it gave the facility back to the council.
It would be great to see an area like these courts open to the public at all times.
Why not keep one of the two courts, upgrade it so it is OK to use, and at the other end have a basketball hoop and a half-court, which are always available and free to use?
When I was younger, our family spent the summer at Ulverstone.
Next to the skate park was a hoop and half-court that could be used by the public.
The area was always buzzing with children and families having a friendly game during summer.
We need more environments like this in Launceston and with the Royal Park area already being heavily used because of rugby, soccer, the skate park and it being so close to Seaport, it could be a great place to create more outdoor gym environments.
