The Launceston-born dancer, who is still touring with Katy Perry on her Prismatic World Tour, is returning to Tasmania next week to spend time with family and also to host a dance workshop in Hobart.

The workshop is the first of many that Brownlie, 25, plans to hold in his home state as he sets up his own company called Locky Brownlie, allowing him to become ‘‘a little bit of a mentor’’ for Tasmania dancers.

‘‘I want to be able to educate kids to have a career in dance,’’ Brownlie said. ‘‘Even though we are in Tasmania and we feel like we are so far away, we have a lot of talent, and if you know how to do it properly and know which avenues to go through, you can succeed.

‘‘I eventually want to bring my friends and my co-workers and people that I work with over in LA to Tasmania and have big conventions for dancers.

‘‘I’d like it to be a yearly thing – or twice a year would be awesome.’’

Brownlie said as he was getting older, he wanted to come home more often.

‘‘I want to be coming back to see my family and friends,’’ he said.

‘‘My eldest sister has just had a daughter, so I have a niece now, so (hosting workshops) will be a great opportunity and an excuse to pop over to see the family, and also to educate people.’’

The former St Patrick’s and Newstead College student has spent the past five years working out of Los Angeles.

His list of achievements include touring with Katy Perry on both her California Dreams and Prismatic World Tour; appearing in both Perry’s Part of Me and the new Prismatic World Tour concert DVDs; touring with Taylor Swift on her Red tour and performing on television shows Glee and Trueblood.

Most of the Prismatic World Tour is complete, with the final set of shows in South America in September.

But the tour break hasn’t stopped Brownlie from keeping busy.

Last week, he was in San Diego performing alongside American club performer Erika Jayne as part of San Diego Gay Pride.

Brownlie has also modelled swimwear and underwear in many international magazines over the past six months.

‘‘Modelling is something that comes along with the dancing territory,’’ he said.

‘‘I think it’s something that’s going to keep happening and I’m very open to it.

‘‘I spent all my years diving, so when I was younger I was wearing speedos left, right and centre, so I have no issue with that.’’

Brownlie still enjoys diving and attends practice on Saturday mornings when he can.

‘‘It’s a nice time to just be me for a little bit,’’ he said.

‘‘All the pools are outside over here too, so the sun is shining and it’s blue skies every day.

‘‘’It’s a really beautiful scenario to sit back and go ‘this is pretty damn good’.’’

Once the Prismatic World Tour wraps up, Brownlie has no plans. He said he was looking forward to some down time in LA.

‘‘When you go on the road, you leave a whole life behind and you go and be this travelling circus for 1 years, so it’s always nice to come back,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m excited to chill in my apartment and do some normal everyday things, like get to know LA again.’’

Brownlie leaves San Diego for Australia today, via Sydney.

With his parents now based in Hobart, Brownlie will spend most of his time in the state capital, which is why he is hosting his workshop at Rosny College.

He plans to visit Launceston and attend a rehearsal of Launceston Musical Society’s Legally Blonde production.

Brownlie will host two dance workshops at Rosny College on August 8.

‘‘It’s going to be a bit of a taster of what it’s like to work in America and in LA, and it’s going to be learning a jazz and commercial-style routines,’’ Brownlie said.

Both workshops will include a 30-minute question and answer session. Brownlie said he was keen to see Tasmania’s talent, as it has been almost two years since he had taken a workshop here.
