The joint operation with the Road Safety Advisory Council will run for 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Sergeant Nick Clark, of Northern Road and Public Order Services, said police would focus on ‘‘the fatal five’’.

‘‘Speeding, drink- and drug-driving, inattention, failure to wear seatbelts and fatigue,’’ he said.

Sergeant Clark said the operation was also being promoted through social media and this would help more people understand how the road rules promoted road safety.

‘‘We want to get the message out there that it’s everyone’s business – not just police, not just other government agencies – it’s a whole-of-community focus and responsibility for road safety,’’ he said.

‘‘We all have to play an active role.’’

Sergeant Clark said the campaign also aimed to get people thinking about road safety every day.

He said police might be anywhere on Wednesday, not just in high-volume traffic areas, in marked and unmarked vehicles, performing static and mobile patrols.
