The council last month approved a negotiating allowance of up to $2000 of in-kind support for general manager Des Jennings to offer Cycling Australia in return for a stage of the event.
Economic and Community Development manager Lorraine Green wrote in the proposal report that the Tour of Tasmania would run between October 6 and October 11 this year.
"The tour is part of the National Road Series where teams compete in 11 tours across Australia," Ms Green wrote.
"Cycling Australia's broadcast partners, the Nine Network and Fox Sports, air two 30-minute highlight packages which includes racing action plus sponsor and tourism features.
"Cycling Australia also provide daily media releases, news packages, videos and photo galleries on all social media channels."
She said the organisation was seeking to partner councils and cited benefits such as increases to the local economy and publicity for the municipality.
"An investment of $5000 is required for each race start or finish hosted by council," she said.
"Cycling Australia has proposed that a stage from Longford to Poatina is an excellent option and has the potential to become an iconic stage of the tour for many years to come."
She said the council would also be required to offer traffic management support, assist in obtaining authority approvals, communicate notifications as required by relevant authorities, assist with waste management, provide access to public toilets and repair any road hazards on the proposed course.
Anticipated costs of hosting the event included $10,000 to Cycling Australia, between $1200 and $2000 for traffic management, $800 for advertising and whatever costs were involved with road repairs.
