Representatives from the Riawunna Centre visited pupils at Ravenswood Heights Primary School to share Coming Into Being stories and to encourage the students to develop cultural respect.

Ahead of NAIDOC Week, the pupils took part in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag-raising ceremony, traditional dancing and worked on an Indigenous garden.

Ravenswood Heights Primary School pupil Sianna Harwood-Smith, 5, said that she especially loved listening to the Coming Into Being stories.

‘‘I’ve been learning how the kangaroos got their tails,’’ Sianna said.

‘‘I liked hearing the Aboriginal book, I’ve read them before with my mum.’’

Riawunna Centre Aboriginal higher education officer Becky Hollis said that it was important to make sure that Tasmanian children have a cultural awareness.

‘‘It’s really great to be able to share these stories and to see the children enjoy them,’’ Ms Hollis said.

‘‘We’ve been getting lots of questions about the colours on the flag and we’ve had a lot of kids asking if the stories are true.

‘‘After this, I will spend a week replenishing and expanding on my knowledge from Aboriginal people.’’

NAIDOC Week will be celebrated across Australia this week.
