In what he believes to be a fundraising first, Lazenby is willing to see his paintings burn if they don’t reach modest reserve prices set for an upcoming cocktail party auction to support Appin Hall Children’s Foundation be held at Rosevears Waterfront Tavern on July 25.
A bonfire will be lit and if a painting is passed in under reserve guests at the auction will watch that particular painting surrender to the flames.
Lazenby is aware that his fundraising idea is unorthodox.
‘‘It could be seen as a controversial idea – maybe it’s art creating art with the fire idea,’’ Lazenby said.
‘‘But I really believe in what Appin Hall and its founding directors Ronnie and Maggie Burns offer children in need.
‘‘I thought long and hard about how to garner community support for Appin Hall.
‘‘I believe what we will be hosting here with Buy or Burn will not only be exciting for guests on the night but also encourage people to dig deep into their pockets for a most worthy cause.’’
Strangers before Lazenby came up with the concept, the artist and Maggie and Ronnie Burns, the ’70s rock singer and guitarist behind the smash hit Smiley, as well as Rosevears Waterfront Tavern owner Nick Daking, are now rock solid collaborators.
"We’re knocked out by Nigel’s extraordinary generosity in offering his paintings for such a fundraising venture to help the children who come to stay with us," said Burns.
"Some of the paintings Nigel has chosen are from his personal collection, some are quite old back to 1982 and he’s also framed others especially for the event.
‘‘He’s not letting them go easily, I recognise how much thought Nigel has given to this and it really means a lot to us."
All money raised from the auction will be donated directly to Appin Hall, which is a respite and healing centre for children at risk.
Since opening in 2004, the centre at Erriba on the Cradle Mountain Road, has provided an estimated 2500 bed nights to children suffering serious illness, such as leukaemia, cystic fibrosis, cancer, or recovering from grief or homelessness.
The cocktail party will be held in the newly opened gallery at the Tavern, which is undergoing a $5 million refurbishment.
