Department of Finance reports reveal that through the Life Gold Pass scheme, former MPs spent more than $35,000 from January to December on domestic travel, while two MPs racked up more than $10,000 for severance travel.

Former Labor Senator John Coates spent the most with his Life Gold Pass, claiming $7402 for travel for himself and family.

His expenses included a $3000 return trip for himself and a family member from Hobart to Brisbane for five days in January.

Former Liberal Senator Paul Calvert was the second-biggest spender, claiming $6536 for himself and his family.

Former Labor MP Dick Adams, who had the third highest domestic travel bill of $5063, is the last former Tasmanian politician able to benefit from the Life Gold Pass.

The federal government moved to tighten the entitlements last year, ceasing most former Tasmanian MPs' claims, including Mr Coates' and Mr Calvert's.

Mr Adams said he was still entitled to three or four trips this year and that his entitlements would last until the end of the parliamentary term.

Finance documents reveal Mr Adams went on three trips in 2014; a return trip to Canberra in May at a cost of $1718, another Canberra trip in September costing $1600 and a trip to Sydney in November costing $608.

Mr Adams said the trips to Canberra were to finish off MP work and the trip to Sydney was for Gough Whitlam's memorial service.

Mr Adams said it wasn't fair that the entitlements scheme had changed, although some people had been abusing it.

"The object of it is that you finish off what you were involved in," he said.

"It's not an entitlement to go on holidays and that should have been monitored."

Former Liberal Senator Guy Barnett spent the most of all former Tasmanian MPs on severance travel, followed by Labor Senator Kerry O'Brien.

Mr Barnett claimed $7752 for travel in the first six months of 2014 and $2037 in the last.

Mr O'Brien spent $546 for the year.

Mr Barnett's flights included four trips to Melbourne, a flight to Perth, a flight to Sydney and a flight to Canberra.

His entitlements ceased on June 30 last year.

He said on Saturday that he did not wish to make any comments as it was not relevant to him any more.
