A $500 MILLION pledge for water infrastructure contained within the nation's first agriculture white paper was on Saturday welcomed by the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association.

TFGA chief executive Peter Skillern applauded the federal government's commitment to delivering the infrastructure across the nation, as well as its bolstering of biosecurity, in its $4 billion plan.
The paper listed $50 million to the provision of better tools and methods for farmers to control pest animals and weeds, as well as $30.8 million to provide five new agriculture counsellors and measure to assist with farmers breaking into new trade markets.
Mr Skillern said although it was still early days in terms of seeing benefits, the paper had promise.
"It's a little bit too early for specifics, particularly in relation to Tasmania, but we welcome it in a broader sense," he said.
"We will be drilling down into the detail of the white paper in the immediate future to assess its full implications for the state industry, which is tasked with increasing production five-fold in the next 35 years.
"On the face of it, the white paper contains the measures we need to pursue that target competitively and profitably."
Primary Industries and Water Minister Jeremy Rockliff said many elements of the paper aligned with the state's AgriVision 2050 plan.
"Additional Commonwealth support to access premium markets on top of recently signed Free Trade Agreements should benefit Tasmanian farmers and help us to reach our growth targets," Mr Rockliff said.
"There is also an important investment in research and development, an area where the Hodgman Liberal Government is also investing to cultivate innovation and increase the value of our produce."
National Farmers' Federation president Brent Finlay said the paper took about two years and more than 700 submissions to create.
"We finally have a clear commitment from government to foster a stronger, more prosperous and vibrant agriculture sector," Mr Finlay said.
"The white paper, alongside the Northern Australia White Paper, the Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre, Austrade's renewed focus on Brand Australia and other key announcements over the year, together create the environment for agriculture to reach its full potential."
