The EPA was alerted to mass dead bream between 50 grams and two kilograms, along five kilometres of the riverbank on Thursday.
The exact cause of the deaths is unknown, but an investigation will determine the outcome in the coming months.
It is believed ‘‘a natural event’’ may have lead to the deaths.
No signs of pollution were observed but water measurements for dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity and pH were taken at various depths along the length of the river.
Samples were collected and have been provided to the government’s animal health laboratory for pathological testing.
Water samples were also taken and provided to the EPA for chemical analysis.
It is the second major mass fish death in Tasmania this year, following the discovery of hundreds of barracouta on the Derwent River in March.
