The state government this month called for tenders to replace bridge access over Mother Cummings Rivulet and the Meander River, part of a $500,000 election pledge.

The loss of the bridges created a two-hour walk to the car park area.

It takes a further three hours to walk to Meander Falls, making a 10-hour round trip for would-be visitors.

The loss of the bridges made the trek impractical for visitors, many of whom were turned away in frustration by the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre.

The tender description, issued by the Parks and Wildlife Service, called for the construction of two single-span, single-lane bridges and associated roadworks on bridge approaches.

The tender is applicable only to contractors prequalified with the Department of State Growth in "bridge category B2 and financial F2".

"It is anticipated that the works will be completed by December 2015," PWS wrote in the tender.

Meander Falls are listed in the 60 Great Walks brochure produced by Forestry Tasmania, Parks and Wildlife Service and Tourism Tasmania.

It is understood about 60,000 copies of the brochure were produced early 2013, including the Tasmanian top-10 bushwalk.

Vehicle access to the falls has been hindered by the lack of bridges for about four tourist seasons.

A mandatory pre-briefing for would-be applicants will be held on site at 11am on Tuesday. Applications for the works close at 2pm on July 22.
