Although the 2015 event was widely hailed as a success, Dorset acting mayor Greg Howard said small changes could be made to make the event more successful in its second year.
The council plans to conduct the 2016 event on April 9 and 10, which will result in longer daylight hours.
"We're going to bring the dates forward because the weather is slightly better and slightly warmer," Cr Howard said.
"The first run, when you run something like this, there's a lot of trial and error involved."
He said the terrain surrounding the mountain bike trails had made it difficult for spectators to find decent vantage points, and as a result the championships were not as good a spectator sport as had been hoped.
Cr Howard also said many of the participants did not bring their partners or families to the event because they were unaware of how it would be run.
"A lot of the mainland riders said that they didn't realise that there was as much accommodation available as what there was, and they didn't realise there would be food stalls and everything set up, and had they known that they would have brought their partners with them," he said.
"They said they would certainly do that next year.
"There's probably a chance that some of the food stalls may not necessarily have catered for the needs of the participants because they're probably eating a different sort of diet than some of the food stalls present."
Cr Howard said the plan for next year's event would be to make it better for spectators and participants, so that hopefully, Derby would have the opportunity to hold the event again in future.
"Overall, we were really happy with the event," he said.
"We will definitely do a better job in future.
"With any new event, if you don't have some teething problems you're very, very lucky."
