WINTER meetings are not usually noted for unearthing too many future stars but the nine-race program at Spreyton on Friday may have been an exception.

Heading the list of impressive winners was well-bred two-year-old Count Out who made a record-breaking debut in the Tasbonus Maiden.
He looks destined for feature races over the summer carnival, along with three-year-old fillies Seajamm and Ready If You Are.
Count Out, ridden by this season’s leading apprentice Ismail Toker, sat outside the favourite Rocklea Road before dashing clear for an easy win.
He ran the helter-skelter 900-metre trip in 52.79 seconds – narrowly eclipsing the track record held by top mare Rebel Bride – and ran his last 600m in a quick 33.46 seconds.
Longford trainer Aiden Nunn wasn’t surprised by the colt’s performance and nor were the punters, as he was a significant firmer.
Nunn paid just over $20,000 for Count Out at the local yearling sale and races the son of Tough Speed with his partner Sarah Boxhall and Jane Mackinnon.
‘‘I had him marked, along with one other horse, that I’d like to buy and I didn’t want to miss out,’’ Nunn said.
‘‘He mainly appealed to me on his looks but he also had the breeding to back it up.’’
Count Out is a half-brother to former star Tasmanian juvenile Socks, being out of the stakes-placed mare Count The Kisses.
‘‘We haven’t pushed him – he went shin-sore in his first preparation,’’ Nunn said.
‘‘He’s been in and out of work a few times.’’
Count Out’s win was Toker’s 44th for the season and he will win the apprentices’ premiership by a big margin.
Boris Thornton, who is second on the table, didn’t find the winner’s stall at Spreyton but made up for it the next day.
The 17-year-old brought up his first Melbourne metropolitan winner when he scored on Crafty Cruiser at Flemington.
