A crowd of 752 naked swimmers plunged into the River Derwent at sunrise to welcome back the light after the year’s longest night.
Most skinny dippers only splashed in the 11-degree water momentarily before dashing back onto the beach.
However, with an air temperature of just one degree, most then quickly sought out the warmth of open fires.
The number of participants in the Dark Mofo nude swim has more than tripled since the festival first began three years ago.
The midwinter swim, touted as a symbolic purification, signalled the end of the 10-day Dark Mofo winter festival.
