Today’s state budget will contain around $130 million for capital works across the North and North-West, in addition to existing funding for roads, dams and rail infrastructure.
Included in the figure is the government’s $60 million Northern infrastructure fund, which will go towards projects like the University of Tasmania’s Launceston campus relocation and the Devonport Living City project.
Treasurer Peter Gutwein said the funding would be the shot in the arm that the North needed, and would create thousands of new jobs.
‘‘I’ve already said that the economic recovery hasn’t been felt as significantly in the North and North-West and that the Hodgman Liberal government will act,’’ he said.
‘‘The budget will deliver for the North and North-West.’’
It’s understood that the funding will have a focus on new construction projects to be outlined in the budget.
‘‘This investment will translate directly into jobs for the North and North-West and, importantly, many of these jobs will be in the building and construction sector,’’ Mr Gutwein said.
‘‘It will boost confidence and it will help drive economic momentum right across the North and North-West.’’
