Trainer Barry Campbell set the Sharkbite two-year-old for the 1400-metre race at the start of his campaign.
‘‘I told [jockey] Brendon McCoull at the time that the horse might not win a race before then, but he’d definitely win the Sires,’’ Campbell said.
‘‘He’s had ‘1400m horse’ stamped all over him from the day he started racing.’’
Campbell knows what it takes to win the final two-year-old feature race of the season, even though he can’t recall all his successful horses.
‘‘I’ve won it a few times but, apart from Admiral and Capone, I can’t remember my other winners,’’ the trainer said.
‘‘I’m not sure whether Alfa ran in it – if he did, he would have won it, because he never got beaten in Tasmania.
‘‘I didn’t run Grand Tycoon, even though he won the two lead-up races, because I doubted he’d get the 1400m.’’
Siorca was bought cheaply by Campbell at the Aceland Stud dispersal sale and the trainer later sold shares to former Tasmanian Turf Club chairman Margot Smart and course photographer Bill Hayes.
‘‘He was a good buy because he’s now won nearly $100,000,’’ the trainer said.
In 11 starts, Siorca has recorded three wins and seven placings.
He was matching motors with star filly Gee Gee Top Notch for the ninth time in their short careers and it was only the third time that he has beaten her.
Gee Gees Top Notch finished second, beaten a half-neck, with Turtles Nest two lengths away third.
