Although the trees have changed, the roads have been updated and buildings have been knocked down or built, some of Cameron Street’s landmarks remain unchanged.

Mrs Hobman’s interest in the history of her surroundings has led her to create the Facebook page Launceston and Northern Tasmania, Historical Photos,  where people can share historical images of the city.

Since she started the page in mid-May, Mrs Hobman said she had been overwhelmed by the response.

The page attracted more than 1000 followers within three days.

‘‘I thought, ‘oh well, I’ll put it out there and start it and see what happens’, and it just took off,’’ she said.

‘‘All I can think is that people were just waiting for something to happen.

‘‘It just seems to be something that everybody is really interested in at the moment.’’

Mrs Hobman said the Cameron and St John street areas of Launceston featured some particularly beautiful heritage buildings.

‘‘It’s really interesting when you go through Launceston and you look up. If you look up you’ll see all sorts of things you don’t really expect to see in front of you,’’ she said.

‘‘We’re lucky here, we’ve still got a fair few [heritage buildings].’’

Mrs Hobman started a page for her home town of Devonport called Devonport and Surrounds: A Pictorial History  about 12 months ago.

Mrs Hobman said she encouraged people to get involved.
