WELL said, G. Sleurink, writing about the lack of compassion shown to children incarcerated on Nauru or Manus (The Examiner, May15).
I think that in years to come we will see the death penalty, which led to the shooting of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, and the government's treatment of persecuted asylum seekers spending hopeless years in detention, in the same way as most people now regard slavery and the caning of little children in schools - a cause of shame and deep regret.

Overcharging
I HAVE once again been charged twice for an item.
Please everyone check your dockets before you leave as once you get home it is not worthwhile going back to store to get the refund.
If everyone was overcharged say $3 a week, what a profit these stores make in a year.

John L Grove
I CANNOT believe that the government is considering closing the John Grove Rehabilitation Centre.
This centre changes peoples lives, and it would be a tragedy for the people of Northern Tasmania, should those who need this specialised treatment be denied access to the wonderful facility.
I speak from experience as I have had a granddaughter who was at the centre for seven months.
The staff made a remarkable difference to her life, not only to her mobility but to her positive attitude to recovery and to life in general.
The staff at the centre are dedicated and give loving care to their patients.
This facility must be available to those in need of this rehabilitation.

Dogs
POOR old Pistol and Boo they are not to know their famous buccaneer owner can trace his ancestry all the way back to the marauding tribe known as Dunces Endangering Pampered Pets.
As for Mr Depp's minders they too were not to know that Barnaby is the most oft used expletive of the Prime Minister, the name of Bronwyn Bishop's pet funnel web, Scott Morrison's Rottweiler, Clive Palmer's tyrannosaurus rex and any tropical cyclone in the vicinity of Queensland.
Perhaps next time Mr Depp will think twice before anchoring his winged galleon off the Barnarbary Coast.
— TONY NEWPORT, Hillwood.
Depp Dogs
I JUST noticed what's wrong with the world.
Somewhere between 6000 and 8000 desperate people, including children, are stranded in small boats for three months in the middle of the ocean with no country coming to their aid.
The boats are broken down and out of fuel, sickness and thirst rife amongst them.
Meanwhile, a movie actor flies his two yorkshire terriers across the globe in a private jet, and it's the dogs that bother the Australian government.
— EDDIE STORACE, Launceston.
John L Grove
AFTER reading the article rehabilitation centre protesters confront Treasurer Joe Hockey I couldn't help but wonder why he would blame the previous government for no funds for the John L Grove rehabilitation centre.
Doesn't he know that after two budgets you can re allocate funds.
Also why didn't Bass Liberal MHR Andrew Nikolic take the opportunity to show Mr Hockey the Tamar at low tide and push for funds to fix the river problem properly.
Raking only shifts the problem a few hundred metres.
It needs to be sucked out, dried and used like the new Grammar soccer field adjacent to the northern outlet.
— GARRY BUDGEON, East Launceston.
Media
MANY aged people, including pensioners, and retirees, have investments in the stock market.
Many rely on the media to publish the prices, movements and dividend as well as financial information. However, as we get older our eyesight deteriorates, so the move by the media is not in our interest.
To print the financial information in a small font, and the values in a faded font is absolute stupidity
The media knows that many an armchair critic will be otherwise apathetic, when like myself they should request a better presentation printed in a larger font using bold print.
I trust the media will take action rather than ignore my request as they usually do, and take action immediately in the public interest.
— JIM CAMPBELL, Ulverstone.
Usefulness
EVEN though I'm getting on a bit I can still remember my days at primary school when some class mates failed their exams, most of them copped it sweet and worked harder, then there was the spoilt brats who blamed everyone they could think of, except themselves, sound familiar, Bass Liberal MHR Andrew Nikolic is doing exactly the same because of his dismal failure to secure continued funding for the John L. Grove rehabilitation centre.
Mr Nikolic has had twenty months to secure the funding for this excellent facility but with only five or six weeks left he resorts to writing a letter to The Examiner blaming an ex Labor Premier and Minister.
— MICK LEPPARD, Invermay.
