The proposal by Northern Police Command is undergoing final touches before being put in front of Commissioner Darren Hine.
If approved, funding that’s needed for the maintenance and upgrade of Newham station could instead be invested in frontline resources.
The Examiner understands that the closure could see an extra squad car on patrol during evenings in Launceston.
Part of the strategy is to throw resources, freed up by the station’s closure, at the significant increase in property crime being experienced in Launceston.
Launceston uniform Inspector Michael Johnson said it would allow more frontline officers to be rostered during an afternoon and night later into the week.
‘‘The proposal is about the infrastructure savings that could be realised – it’s an old building and in need of a fair bit of work to update it,’’ he said.
‘‘The ability to deploy people operationally is a bonus.’’
However, Inspector Johnson said the proposal was in its infancy and far from decided.
‘‘I get there might be some people nervous, but it’s still very early days,’’ he said.
Inspector Johnston said the small amount of feedback received had been ‘‘fairly positive’’ to date.
He said policing methods were quickly changing and a more mobile service was expected by the community.
Newnham station is staffed with 10 police and open to the public between 9am and 4pm.
After this time officers follow up warrants, process court summonses and do other inquiry work.
They also carry out minor criminal investigations.
