It was announced on Thursday afternoon that Wes Ford would take up the position after Alex Schaap retired earlier this year.
As well as Primary Industries, Mr Ford is the former general manager of Water and Marine Resources, and was most recently the acting deputy secretary for AgriGrowth.
Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage Matthew Groom said Mr Ford had represented the Government on a number of partnership based boards, and worked closely with the University of Tasmania.
''I would also like to acknowledge the work of John Mollison who has been acting in this role since the departure of the previous director,'' Mr Groom said.
