Chief Magistrate Michael Hill has advised the Tasmanian Governor that he intends to retire from the position on October 21.
He has held the position since 2009.
In 1985, Chief Magistrate Hill was appointed Tasmania's first small claims magistrate, and was appointed as a magistrate on December 22, 1987.
In a release issued by the state government on Wednesday, Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin said he has introduced innovative court procedures and the concept of therapeutic jurisprudence.
''He was instrumental in the introduction of the Contest Mention court in Tasmania in 1996 and in the establishment and piloting of the Mental Health Diversion List in the Hobart Magistrates Court in May 2007,'' Dr Goodwin said.
''While Chief Magistrate Hill will remain in his position until his retirement in October, it is timely to thank him for his exceptional service to the Magistrates Court and the Tasmanian community, and to wish him well in retirement.''
