Prosecution witness Kathleen Leonie Hayes told the Launceston Magistrates Court on Tuesday that the flight from Melbourne to Launceston was the final leg of an international flight with her husband.
She said that the three young men in the row in front of her ‘‘were extraordinarily loud and full of profanities’’ and exacerbated her stress.
Co-accused Jacob Adam Williams, 23, of Bracknell, and Mathew Leigh Coates, 26, of Prospect, have pleaded not guilty to offensive and disorderly behaviour on Virgin Australia flight 1368 on February 21, 2014.
Mrs Hayes told Commonwealth prosecutor Megan Hickton that said she had been seated in row 27, at the back of the plane, and received a hot drink but by the time cabin crew reached the men in front of her the plane was starting to descend and hot drinks had stopped.
She said the men grumbled loudly and then she re-enacted what she said was the aisle-seated man’s stressed scream to the steward of ‘‘Mark! Mark! Mark! Mark!’’ in a squawking tone at the top of her voice.
‘‘I was fearful,’’ Mrs Hayes said.
She said the steward ran to the men’s row, told them to ‘‘shut up’’ and left their area.
Mrs Hayes said the window-seated man, whom she thought was the most aggressive, said, ‘‘I’m going to find you and kill you mate’’ in the steward’s direction.
She said she saw police on the tarmac when the flight landed at Launceston.
Defence solicitor Evan Hughes suggested to Mrs Hayes during cross-examination that the threat to kill was only directed between the three men themselves, but she denied this.
Mr Hughes further asked the witness about the men’s swearing and she agreed that the swearing was not directed at the crew.
Magistrate Simon Brown adjourned the hearing to June 26 at 9.45am.
