The series' Tasmanian heat will be held from May 7 to 9 during Agfest at Carrick's Quercus Park.
Success in the series will guarantee a position in the Australian team for the October Timbersports World Championship in Poland.
Gurr will face off against eight other competitors from across the state, including Winkleigh 2014 team world champion Dale Beams, Geoffrey Lovell, of Franklin, Henry Maine, of Penguin, Kody Steers, of Sheffield, Nick Direen and Samuel Pritchard, of Deep Bay, and Stuart Reed and Kelly Oakley, of Bagdad.
The top four competitors from Tasmania will go on to the national finals, to be held from October 8 to 11 at the Bathurst 1000 event.
The Agfest heat will have six disciplines between axe and saw categories.
Standing block, springboard and underhand chop will be held for the axe, and stock saw, hot saw and single buck will be run for the saw.
Australia currently holds the world champion Timbersports title in the team relay.
The competition is run by saw company Stihl. Digital and brand activation manager Lee Gooch said Tasmania had a long history in woodchopping competitions.
"We're excited to bring this world-renowned event to Australia," Mr Gooch said.
"By having our own series we open up the playing field to welcome new talent to the sport.
"Australia has always been a major player in international Stihl Timbersports competitions, so it will be an exciting journey to see just how far we can take this event."
The statewide competition will see more than 40 axemen and sawmen battle for woodchopping glory.
