Police said it appeared the offender had stayed at the North Launceston Bunnings site for a ''prolonged period of time'' on Saturday night and early on Sunday morning.
Damage was caused to plant machinery at the building site next to the Lindsay Street store.
Items were stolen from the store, and the building itself was damaged in the process.
Police said the offender caused significant damage and created a ''considerable amount of noise''.
The incident is being investigated by police, who are appealing to anyone who may have information.
