The $1000 scholarship was a bequest to the Northern Migrant Resource Centre to assist an African student with their post-grade 10 education.
Dorothy’s commitment to her studies and her two part-time jobs made her a standout candidate for the judges.
‘‘I am really happy, I am just overwhelmed,’’ Dorothy said.
‘‘Study is all right now, I’m just trying to get into it and study hard.
‘‘I just find it interesting to do something a bit harder.’’
Migrant Resource Centre director Kai Kitchin said the scholarship would make a massive difference to Dorothy’s schooling and her life.
‘‘Dorothy comes from a large family so it will assist her with books and anything else she may need in her education,’’ Ms Kitchin said.
‘‘She holds down two part-time jobs while going to school so this will make a massive difference in her studies.’’
It is the first scholarship of its kind and Ms Kitchin said the Migrant Resource Centre staff were thankful when they heard about the generosity of the bequest.
‘‘We would like to see more come through, not only to the Migrant Resource Centre but to other young people and community members,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s at times like these that we’re reminded of the generosity of other people and people’s willingness to support our young people.’’
