The George Bell portrait of Henry ''Harry'' Murray, Australia's most decorated soldier, has been loaned to the museum as part of the centenary of Anzac.
Murray is the great, great uncle of Hadspen's Emily Morgan.
Ms Morgan is a single parent by choice and said she wanted a strong male figure to be in the life of her eight-month-old son.
She named him Harry.
''(Murray) was such a hero in the first world war, what a person to be named after,'' Ms Morgan said.
''I hadn't really realised, even when I named him, until I looked at the stories of Harry again.''
She said because her children were conceived via a donor, they were unlikely to meet their father's family.
''When I was thinking about naming Harry, I wanted it to be a family name,'' Ms Morgan said.
''I had always liked the name Harry, the first thing I think of when I think of Harry is my great, great uncle.
''The more I can find out about my family, the closer connected they'll be to their family.''
She said she would one day take her children to see the statue of Murray at Evandale.
