The Launceston 30-year-old has taken control of his third consecutive stage race with a trademark uphill burst in the Giro del Trentino in Italy.
Level on time with the leaders after the opening stage team time trial, the 30-year-old Team Sky leader burst away from his rivals a couple of kilometres from the end of the 168.2-kilometre second stage around Lake Garda.
Porte distanced his rivals on the climb to Bretonico to win by 16 seconds over Mikel Landa (Astana).
It extends a sensational season for the world’s top-ranked cyclist following his second Paris-Nice crown and victories in the Tour of Catalunya and Australian time trial.
The Giro del Trentino has two more mountain stages remaining providing perfect preparation for Porte’s tilt at the Giro d’Italia from May 9.
