Police said the 19-year-old Launceston man was caught on Monday night on the highway near the South Esk River at Hadspen.
Police will allege that the driver, who holds a provisional licence, was caught on a hand-held speed gun doing 175km/h in a 110km/h zone.
He will face court at a later date, and his car has been clamped.
Acting Inspector Craig Fox said: “This type of reckless and dangerous driving behaviour is a disgrace and puts all road users at an unacceptable risk.”
“Police would like to remind drivers that excessive speeding can result in the driver being disqualified from driving, substantial fines and the offending vehicle potentially being confiscated,” Acting Inspector Fox said.
Police have urged anyone who sees dangerous driving to report it to police on 131 444.
