GOLF North had a successful weekend, winning the intrastate men’s Thyne Trophy and the women’s North versus South Plate at the Devonport Golf Club.
The Northern men’s team of Greg Longmore, James Pyke, Jack Tregaskis-Jago, Mitch Van Noord, Josh Molendyk, Cam Bell and David House proved too strong finishing undefeated for the tournament.
They defeated the Southern Country 6-1 in Saturday’s round and followed up with a convincing 5-2 victory over reigning champions Southern Metropolitan and a 4-3 win over Golf North-West yesterday.
Longmore and Pyke finished square with Nathan Gatehouse and Mark Schulze, Tregaskis-Jago, Van Noord and House defeated Andrew Phillips, David Petryman and Mark Freeman 2 and 1 and Bell beat Craig Christie 4 and 3.
Molendyk went down to Matthew Glover 2 and 1.
Southern Metropolitan finished second Golf North-West and Southern Country tying on one and half contests each.
‘‘The Northern team was a pretty strong unit and were favourites before the event started,’’ Golf Tasmania executive officer Stuart Eaton said.
In the women’s North versus South Plate, the Northern team has stormed back to defeat its Southern adversaries.
Trailing 2-3 after the first day at Devonport Golf Club, the Northern team dominated yesterday’s matches with wins to Tammy Hall, Lain Thorn, Amanda Smith, Tayla Bennett, Deidre Panton, Rosemary Paton and Kaye Morse to take the contest 9½ matches to 5½.
